Are oats gluten-free?
CHECK FIRST
Only if certified gluten-free. Oats don't contain gluten themselves, but regular oats are very often contaminated with wheat, barley or rye.
Why
- Oats are commonly grown, harvested and milled alongside gluten grains.
- A small share of people with coeliac disease also react to avenin, the protein in oats.
Watch out for
- Regular oatmeal, granola and oat bars unless labelled gluten-free.
- Introduce certified gluten-free oats gradually if you have coeliac disease, ideally with your doctor or dietitian.
Gluten-free alternatives
- Certified gluten-free oats
- Quinoa flakes
- Buckwheat porridge
